Some places make you reach for your camera. Ninh Binh also makes you want to put it away for a while. A small boat glides along the water, limestone mountains rise on either side, and the fields change colour with the seasons. For a moment, the only sound you may notice is an oar touching the river.

If you enjoy Vietnam’s lively streets but would also like a quieter day in your journey, make room for Ninh Binh.

See the landscape from a small boat

Many visitors choose a boat trip at Trang An or Tam Coc. Both are beautiful in different ways, so there’s no need to fit them both into one busy day.

At Trang An, the boat follows waterways between the mountains and passes through caves. One moment you’re beneath the open sky; the next, you’re moving through a dim passage before emerging into another valley. The wider Trang An Landscape Complex is recognised by UNESCO for both its cultural and natural heritage.

Tam Coc has a gentler countryside feel. The river winds past fields with limestone peaks in the distance. The colours change throughout the year: you may see golden rice at certain times, but the green fields and mountain views are lovely too.

Whichever trip you choose, let the boat set the pace. Take your photographs, then spend a little time simply looking around.

Leave time for something after the boat ride

There’s more to Ninh Binh than the view from the water. You could visit Bich Dong Pagoda, set against the hillside, or stop for a drink and watch the countryside go by.

If you enjoy a climb, Hang Mua offers a wide view over the surrounding rivers, fields, and mountains. The steps are steep, though, so it’s best to decide based on how everyone in your group feels that day. Travelling with children or older relatives? A gentle walk and an unhurried café stop can be just as enjoyable.

Sit down for a proper local lunch

One Ninh Binh speciality to look out for is cơm cháy, crispy rice often served with a savoury sauce. The area is also known for its goat dishes. If goat isn’t for you, order something you genuinely enjoy—there’s no rule saying you have to work through every “must try” food on a list.

A relaxed lunch suits this place. Give yourself time to eat, talk, and rest before heading out again.

Keep the day simple

For a first visit, one boat route and one or two other stops can make a lovely day. Bring water and sun protection for the boat ride, plus a light layer if the weather calls for it. Routes and visiting arrangements can change, so check the current information before setting off.

Ninh Binh’s most memorable moment might not happen at a famous viewpoint. It could come as your boat rounds a bend between the mountains, or as you walk along a quiet country road after lunch.
