If you're visiting Vietnam for the first time, Ha Long Bay is one destination that's truly worth adding to your itinerary.

Thousands of limestone islands rise from the calm water, creating scenery completely different from the busy streets of Hanoi or the beaches of central Vietnam.

And the best way to experience it? Get out on the water.

🌊 1. Take a Cruise Through Ha Long Bay

A cruise is the classic Ha Long Bay experience.

Once the boat leaves the harbor, the city slowly disappears behind you and the limestone islands begin to surround the ship.

On a beautiful day, simply sitting on the deck with a coffee and watching the scenery pass by can be one of the most relaxing moments of your Vietnam trip.

You can choose a day cruise or stay overnight.

If your schedule allows, we usually recommend spending 2 days and 1 night on the bay.

After most day visitors leave, the atmosphere becomes quieter. You'll have time to watch the sunset, enjoy dinner on board and wake up surrounded by the bay the following morning.

🚢 2. Day Cruise or Overnight Cruise?

A day cruise is convenient if you're short on time or prefer to keep Hanoi as your base.

You can leave Hanoi in the morning, cruise around the bay during the day and return in the evening.

However, if you have five to seven days or more in Vietnam, an overnight cruise gives you a much more relaxed experience.

It's particularly suitable for couples, honeymooners, families and travelers visiting with parents.

🛶 3. Try Kayaking or a Traditional Rowing Boat

Large cruise ships show you the scale of Ha Long Bay, but smaller boats allow you to experience its quieter side.

Kayaking between limestone cliffs can take you into peaceful lagoons and smaller areas that large ships can't reach.

Don't want to paddle? Some locations offer traditional rowing boats operated by local people, which can be a comfortable choice for families and older travelers.

And one practical tip: use a waterproof phone pouch. Ha Long Bay is beautiful, but probably not beautiful enough to sacrifice your phone for a photo 😂

🏞️ 4. Explore the Caves

Ha Long Bay isn't only about the sea.

Depending on your cruise route, you may visit one of the area's impressive natural caves, filled with stalactites, stalagmites and unusual rock formations.

You'll usually need to walk and climb some stairs, so comfortable shoes are a good idea.

If you're traveling with older family members, let your tour operator know in advance so the itinerary can be adjusted accordingly.

🌅 5. Stay on Deck for Sunset

When the weather cooperates, sunset is one of the loveliest times in Ha Long Bay.

Find a comfortable spot on deck, order a drink and watch the sunlight slowly disappear behind the limestone islands.

It's also one of the best times for photography, as the light is softer than it is around midday.

🍽️ 6. Dining on Board

Most overnight cruises provide meals, typically featuring Vietnamese dishes, seafood and some international options.

Depending on the cruise, meals may be served buffet-style or as a set menu.

If you're vegetarian, have food allergies, don't eat certain meats, or are traveling with children who have specific requirements, tell your travel company beforehand.

🛏️ 7. Choosing Your Cabin

If your budget allows, consider a cabin with a private balcony or large panoramic window.

There's something special about waking up, opening the curtains and seeing Ha Long Bay right outside your room.

Cruises vary considerably in size, service, food, facilities and atmosphere. The most expensive option isn't automatically the right one.

A couple on an anniversary trip may want something very different from a family traveling with young children.

☀️ 8. When Should You Visit?

Ha Long Bay can be visited throughout the year, although the experience changes with the seasons.

Spring can be pleasant with occasional mist. Summer brings brighter sunshine and beautiful colors but also hotter weather and occasional rain. Autumn is popular for comfortable temperatures and photography, while winter can be cooler and mistier.

Northern Vietnam's weather can change, so check the forecast again shortly before departure.

🎒 9. What Should You Pack?

Keep it simple.

Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, comfortable shoes, a light jacket, swimwear, a waterproof phone pouch and a power bank.

For an overnight cruise, consider taking a small overnight bag rather than carrying all your luggage onto the ship.

Make sure you also bring any identification or travel documents requested by your cruise operator.

📸 10. Best Time for Photos

The deck, your balcony, sunset over the bay and smaller boats passing between limestone cliffs all make excellent photo opportunities.

For portraits, early morning and the period before sunset usually offer softer light.

Bright, white, beige or red clothing can also stand out beautifully against Ha Long Bay's blue-green water and limestone scenery.

❤️ A Tip From VIETLUMI

For first-time visitors to northern Vietnam, consider combining:

Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Ha Long Bay

Each destination offers something completely different: Hanoi for culture and city life, Ninh Binh for peaceful countryside and dramatic landscapes, and Ha Long Bay for slowing down and enjoying time on the water.

If you're unsure which cruise, cabin or itinerary suits your family, tell VIETLUMI TRAVEL how many days you have and who you're traveling with.

We'll help you build a Vietnam journey that fits the way you actually want to travel.

We hope your first trip to Vietnam leaves you already thinking about the next one. 🇻🇳❤️
